The Smart Factory
In this course, you will learn key concepts on how to implement and develop existing and new modern production facilities
What is a Smart Factory?
A Smart Factory is the final goal of the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0.
It can be defined as an optimized manufacturing facility which can facilitate launching new products depending on market dynamics, is scalable enough to meet demand variation for existing products, is able to produce Finished Goods at least cost, has smart machines, sensors and robots which are seamlessly integrated with information system architecture to enable high level of automation in transaction processing and has real time analytics that helps in minimizing downtime and improving efficiency.
Despite the wide range of technologies exploited, its backbone are the human skills. It is not wrong to say that such a facility is made by and for workers: they will supervise and optimize the production system, while hard and repetitive activities will be performed by the machines. Moreover, the decision making process will be supported by Artificial Intellingence and Big Data Analytics.
This online course aims to present the practitioner the benefits and risks associated with the development of such facilities.
The key technologies will be introduced, while concepts like Digital Twin and Discrete Event Simulation will be broadly discussed.

Born in Italy, I studied Aerospace Engineering at the University of Padua.I started as a Manufacturing Engineer in the aerospace sector at AvioAero, a company of GE Aviation, in Rivalta di Torino, where I had the opportunity to manage the industrialization of mechanical transmissions for American and Canadian companies, leaders in the production of aircraft engines.I then moved to Germany to Rolls-Royce Deutschland in Berlin and then to Aerospace Transmission Technologies, a Joint Venture of Rolls-Royce and Liebherr Aerospace based on Lake Constance. In Germany I had the opportunity to support the Capability Acquisition team to develop the production methods…
